Open Knowledge Initiative

The Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) will specify and develop a "next-generation" learning systems architecture for pedagogical development and systems integration.

It is generously funded by the Mellon Foundation for a two-year period and the core members are: MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina State and Dartmouth.

The project is being led from MIT by Jeff Merriman and V.J. Kumar. The aim is to leverage off other major initiatives through having collaborative partners from other institutions and from industry as well as alliances with organisations such as the IMS Global Learning Consortium.

The principal outcome will be a standards based reference framework, which specifies the systems components required for a pedagogically driven learning model. The first draft of the OKI architecture is expected in January 2002.

OKI has generated enormous interest in the US, partly because of the very ambitious agenda and partly because of the power and prestige of the core members.
