About the IIS&R (COLIS Phase 2) Project

Background

The IIS&R Project is the second phase of the COLIS Project. The Macquarie E-Learning Centre Of Excellence (MELCOE) manages the project.

Background to the Project

What is COLIS?

COLIS (Collaborative Online Learning and Information Services) is a functional Demonstrator that was established in 2002 as a test bed for the development of next generation collaborative online learning and information services. The project was supported by Commonwealth funding from the Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) and was managed by a consortium of universities, with Macquarie University as the lead institution.

The COLIS project developed a scalable standards based model for institutional interoperability. This was to enable the seamless sharing of online learning resources. COLIS includes single sign-on access management, a learning object repository, a learning object management system, digital rights management, a federated search gateway and a learning management system.

The COLIS team worked with international software companies, corporate management systems providers, learning management systems, content producers, and national government agencies to design and develop the COLIS Demonstrator.

What is the IIS&R Project?

The IIS&R Project is the second phase of the COLIS project. It was designed to improve interaction between IT systems and repositories within a standards framework. This was achieved by sustaining and extending the outcomes of the 2002 COLIS Demonstrator project and by conducting research with software developers, service providers and educational researchers.

Research was conducted into:

  • technical integration and interoperability of standards based e-learning systems
  • learning object repositories
  • search and discoverability of learning objects
  • digital rights management
  • staff workflow and management issues regarding the use of integrated e-learning systems

The IIS&R Project has two parts: the Education Project and the Substitutability Project.
